What People Are Saying

“I went to Manchuria midweek after a friend of mine told me about it. Love the twist to their cocktails, something different. Great staff and place to visit on a date or with friends”

Jenna – Legal Secretary, Brighton

“Stumbled across Manchuria (I like it’s hidden away) with some workmates and had a few beers and cocktails, great music and ambience”

Kevin – IT Contractor, Pakenham

“Up an unassuming stairwell in a Chinatown laneway, you’ll find Manchuria – one part opium den, one part jazz club and several parts good times.

Clustered couches make a great spot for a catch-up while smouldering jazz tunes and moody lighting conjure a perfect first-date atmosphere. Dapper bartenders whip up a Lemon Drop Martini with finesse or help with selections from the extensive whisky list. The food taps into the Chinatown vibe, with Peking duck and salt-and-pepper soft-shell crab among the choices. Manchuria seems to be off the corporate crowd radar, so you can have an after-work drink and still hear yourself think.”

“Infused with a feel of the Orient, Manchuria is one of the best bars in Melbourne for an intimate and romantic date!

Located just off bustling Chinatown, Waratah Place resembles a deserted alley. Look up, and you will spot the red, illuminated signage on a nondescript building. Climb the stairwell to the first floor and look for an unmarked door, which opens to reveal a conservative, oriental décor.

Your choice of seating includes tucked-away alcoves, a range of tables for groups both large and small, as well as a lounging area. Our recommendation is to book an alcove in advance (via phone only; no website).

On offer is a wide selection of cocktails, spirits, beer and wine. The cocktails are definitely Manchuria’s claim to fame. Tapas are available and include spring rolls, Peking duck, wasabi peas—to name a few.

In summary: soft lighting, scrumptious cocktails, and secluded alcove seating—all the right ingredients for a perfect date can be found at Manchuria, definitely a hidden gem amongst the best bars in Melbourne!” –
